Scrapbooking Basics

By Catherine Olivia

Scrapbooking is becoming a very popular hobby and is a wonderful way to preserve your memories. Whether a birth, wedding, family vacation, family reunion, birthday or holiday many people find joy, and a hugely creative outlet scrapbooking.

A scrapbook makes a one of a kind and unforgettable gift. When I was married my friend Charlene made a scrapbook of my wedding for my husband and me. The scrapbook contains pictures, our invitation and wedding napkins. She had used stickers pertaining to a wedding theme, a bride and groom (of course!) and embellished the scrapbook with hearts, ladybugs (my wedding theme) champagne glasses, music notes, and lots of happy things. She had put a lot of time and thought and love into this scrapbook and I will cherish it forever.

Some people say that scrapbooking is addictive. The only thing limiting your scrapbooking is your imagination. Once you come up with a scrapbook theme, say 'Smith Family Reunion' take it from there. Using pictures, and doing what is called journaling is essential to scrapbooking. Its one thing to have a group picture of everybody standing on the dock at the lake, its another to write each persons name, the date and then another event of the day. Perhaps Cousin Sally was pushed off the pier by Cousin Bruce. Remembering this event will always bring a smile to your face.

Perhaps you could have each family bring a picture of their home with them, or a picture of something representative of the state they have travelled from. I am from Maryland, so Id bring a blue crab. Someone living in Iowa might bring a picture of an ear of corn - another fun way to personalize your album.

Perhapy youll want to interview a few people and write their thoughts down in your journal. This would be something to be enjoyed through the generations.

Once you have your pictures and have figured out your journaling and documenting the fun really begins. There are literally thousands of different types of stickers and stamps available today to enhance your scrapbook. Perhaps youll get a packet of stickers dealing with a picnic basket to include around your pictures. Scissors have come a long way too. Remember when there were only pinking shears? There are literally dozens of different effects that can be made by simply using scissors.

Scrapbooking supplies are found in most hobby and craft stores and there is an abundance of scrapbooking material available from many on line vendors.
